Will my mattress work on an adjustable base?

By the kaipuyiree product team · Updated

Short answer

If your mattress is 10″ thick or less and made of memory foam, gel foam, latex, or a foam or latex hybrid with pocket springs, it should bend with a kaipuyiree base. Traditional innerspring coil mattresses, thick and firm one-piece mattresses, coconut-palm mattresses, air mattresses and water beds are not recommended.

The five-minute check

  1. Thickness. Measure it. 10″ or less works best on a kaipuyiree base.
  2. Inside. Look at the law tag or the maker’s website. Foam, latex or a hybrid withpocket (individually wrapped) springs will bend. Traditional innerspring will not.
  3. Size. The mattress size must match the base: Full 54″ × 75″, Queen60″ × 80″, King 76″ × 80″.
  4. Warranty. Many mattress makers say on their site whether their mattress is approved for adjustable bases. If it says yes, you are set.

Mattresses that work

TypeWhy it works
Memory foamBends easily and stays in contact with the deck.
Gel memory foamSame as memory foam; the gel only changes how warm it feels.
LatexFlexible and springs back when you go flat again.
Latex or foam hybrid with pocket springsIndividually wrapped coils flex one by one, so the mattress can bend.
Thin flexible foam or latexFine for a guest room or a lighter sleeper.

Mattresses to avoid

TypeWhy not
Innerspring coilConnected coils resist bending; the mattress lifts off the base at the hinge and wears unevenly.
Thick, hard coconut-palm or sisalToo stiff to follow the base.
One-piece thick and firmAnything over 10″ or very firm will not fold at the head and knees.
Air mattressMoves and slides; not made to bend over a hinge.
Water bedNot made to sit on a motorized base.

Why 10 inches?

A thick mattress has to stretch on the outside and squash on the inside every time the head or knees lift. Up to about 10″, foam and latex do that easily. Thicker mattresses resist the bend, push back against the motors, and can bunch up behind your shoulders.

Thickness also changes the height of your bed. The legs give 7.5″–12.5″ of clearance under the frame; your mattress sits on top of the deck. A 10″ mattress on the highest leg setting makes a tall bed, so think about how easy it will be to sit down and stand up.

Will the mattress slide?

A metal retainer bar fits at the foot end of every kaipuyiree base. It stops the mattress from sliding toward your feet when the head is raised. Fit it before you put the mattress on.

Buying a new mattress for the base?

Look for one sold as “adjustable base compatible”, 8″ to 10″ thick, in foam, latex or a pocket-spring hybrid. If two people share the bed, remember the kaipuyiree Full, Queen and King are single bases: both sides move together.

Related questions

Does it come with a mattress?

No. You get the base, the remote, the legs, the mattress retainer bar, hardware and the manual. Use your own mattress if it is 10″ thick or less and made of foam, latex or a foam/latex hybrid.

How high off the floor is it?

The legs screw in to set 7.5″ to 12.5″ of clearance between the floor and the frame. This is under-bed clearance, not the height of the mattress surface: the deck and your mattress add height above it.

Is the King a split King?

No. The kaipuyiree King shown here is one 80″ × 76″ base for a standard 76″ × 80″ King mattress, so both sides move together. Independent sides need separate bases and compatible mattresses. Twin XL and Split King are not included in this catalog.
